Each RSPCA branch is a separate charity working alongside the National Charity and its Inspectorate for the well being of all animals in its area. We all operate under rules set by Headquarters and receive support from them but no funding. The Canterbury & District Branch currently only has facilities to house about 30 cats as we use a commercial cattery to hold and rehome unwanted cats. Any rescued or unwanted dogs and most wildlife have to be taken outside the area. However, to help relieve the situation we are planning to build and manage a much needed Branch Animal Centre (CADAC). We have already purchased 5 acres of land in Westbere, outside Canterbury. The site is next to the water treatment plant and overlooks the Westbere lakes. Follow this link to see for yourself! Additionally, successful Whitstable-based George Wilson and his Finance Advisor Paul Godding have volunteered their professional services and the expertise of their construction company to project manage the build and purchase of materials. George has already fenced the land at no cost. We have also benefited from the help of Clague Architects who, with George and Ken Webb (project manager). have completed the planning application which we hope will be approved by March. Recognition must also go to Wildthing nature consultants who are over seeing the development of the site to ensure all local wildlife is unharmed and able to flourish during the build and after. Phil Bolton has been very thorough in his guidance, to ensure minimal impact on the current wildlife and fauna. Be sure to watch out for updates.
